If you’ve been diggin’ our monochrome OLEDs but need something bigger, this 2.3″ diagonal display will delight you. Featuring 128×32 individual blue OLED pixels, each pixel can be turned on or off by the controller chip. The display produces its own light requiring no backlight, which reduces power consumption and ensures very high contrast and crisp text and graphics.

The SSD1305 driver chip allows communication via 8-bit, I2C, or SPI interfaces, with SPI recommended for its speed and minimal wiring (4 or 5 wires). It requires a 3.3V power supply and logic levels; included is a breadboard-friendly level shifter for 5V logic devices like Arduino. Average current draw is about 50mA from the 3.3V supply. A built-in boost converter drives the OLEDs and may emit a buzzing noise, which can be minimized by insulation.

Each kit includes one assembled OLED module with a bezel and 4 mounting holes, a HC4050 level shifter, a 220uF capacitor for stable power supply, and a stick of header for soldering. The display is shipped without the header attached. Modes can be changed from 8-bit to SPI or I2C with minor soldering. A detailed tutorial and Arduino library are available to get started, supporting text, bitmaps, pixels, and basic shapes. The display requires buffering and at least 512 bytes of RAM.

Note: OLED pixels dim after about 1000 hours of continuous use. To maintain uniform brightness, turn off the display when not in use.
